Stretching 370 miles
(600 km) along the western edge of the South Island, the
West Coast is a rugged, primeval region of contrasting
features – high snow-capped mountains, towering
rainforests, lowland river valleys, dramatic coastlines,
bizarre limestone landscapes, grinding glaciers, surging
rivers and brooding lakes. This is where our natural heritage
is preserved in five National Parks and a World Heritage
area.
Human development on “The
Coast” dates back at least 800 years when Maori
tribes are thought to have arrived in search of Pounamu
(greenstone/jade). In the 1860s, gold rush fever brought
the first Europeans and many new settlements sprang up,
some of which are now historic sites, some of which evolved
into present day towns.
There are numerous activities and
items of very real interest in this area, that make a
great day trip just 90 minutes from the lodge. Drive yourself

and new adventures.
Walking/Trekking
There are more than fifty walking tracks and trails throughout
the West Coast ranging in duration from less than an hour
to five days. This extensive network of walks offers guests
the opportunity to stroll through beautiful forested coastline,
explore abandoned goldmines or even stand on one of the
regions numerous glaciers. And all before heading back
to the lodge for drinks and dinner! Travelling and walking
alone or being driven and guided by the lodge, we can
promise you once in a lifetime walking experiences.
Heli-hiking
As an alternative, we would be pleased to organise a heli-hike
for you with the benefit of ease of access to the glaciers,
an enjoyable flight and the chance to plant your feet
on the glacier itself.
