Lake Rotoroa Lodge has an enviable reputation in its continuing successful guiding program. All our guides are members of the New Zealand Professional Fly Fishing Guides Association and are dedicated to ensuring that they give you the best possible fly fishing experience whilst you are here. Each season they build strong relationships with fly fishing enthusiasts and have proven their abilities with the increasing number returning to Lake Rotoroa Lodge year after year.

Your Guide will take you on a fly fishing adventure that will be an experience remembered for years to come. Departing the lodge in their 4WD vehicle shortly after an introduction by the manager, you will spend the day hearing stories of fishing adventures past and of the history of the paradise in which you are walking.  Your guide, after consulting others will have chosen the best possible river to fish on the day and his decisions are made purely for your pleasure and level of experience.

Some of our rivers offer challenges not found in other parts and this is what brings anglers back time and again.

We have a common goal and that is to give you the best opportunity in stalking that elusive prey, the NZ Wild Brown Trout.

This can be a really wonderful way of seeing the incredible beauty of New Zealand. You can simply take advantage of the helicopters dropping fishermen back to the lodge and take a short scenic flight, but there is a great deal more besides.

At Lake Rotoroa Lodge we use reputable and reliable helicopter companies dependent upon the area visited and the purpose of the visit. In doing this we are able to maximise the quality of the experience by using the company with the greater knowledge of the specific zone. It is possible to tailor almost any trip with access to four different types of helicopter.

The Walk leads through a diverse remnant of the beech/podocarp forest, rich in bird life, along a wide and well-graded track to a picturesque mossy waterfall.

The track starts from the Braeburn Road, 220 yards (200 m) from the front of the lodge on the other side of the Gowan Bridge. Initially, the track follows the remains of a road constructed in the 1950s, during the hydroelectric investigations. Flanking this flat section is a grove of distinctive fushia trees forming a natural avenue. They can be recognised by their flaky, paper-thin red bark, which peels away from the often gnarled and twisted trunks.

Known to Maori as kotukutuku, tree fushia (Fushia excorticata) is not only unique to New Zealand, but is the largest member of the fushia family in the world. It also has the distinction of being one of our few deciduous native species. In spring, the lifeless-looking trees produce new leaves and, later, green flowers that change in colour to an attractive burgundy.

The flowers occur in two forms, a hermaphrodite (both male and female) flower, which can be distinguished by its very unusual blue pollen, and a female flower. Both occur in the same area but not on the same tree.
